I have heard it said

that when a woman

tells a story,

she becomes

both mother and child,

teller and listener,

curator and ticket holder,

to this event

that catalogues

her life and destiny.

It is true that each of us has a destiny to fulfill which may be assigned at birth. Believing that is true, I reluctantly left an academic position to become Medical Director of a three hundred child welfare agency. Suddenly and without any warning or experience, I was swimming in the details of my patient’s trauma.

Becoming mother and child of their stories, as curator I held the ticket but was also trying to give that ticket away to bring order to their lives. Listening to their story to give it meaning, I was telling to try to get them help. Destiny.
